Car audio systems – for beginners
March 13, 2008
Selecting an ideal car audio & getting it installed properly can be very exciting, though sometimes very confusing. The difficulty arises from staggering number of car audio brands in the market and their jargons. There are also a number of things, that can mislead, such as some of the myths about power ratings, amplification needs, shape of speakers & speaker drivers (2-way, 3-way …etc). Most often people are misguided by greedy car audio dealers, in order to push their products onto them. Only way to make good selection is through understanding of the car audio systems.
In our previous article "Build your ideal car audio system", we read very basics on how one should go about building an ideal car audio system starting from a factory fitted Car audio system. We also read about, need for better speakers, amplifiers, subwoofers and how to plan the buying.
Mr. Fenil Mehta, of Sound & Acoustics Designs, defines an "ideal" car audio system as…
The “Ideal” car audio system is not necessarily the loudest one, or the most expensive one. It’s the one that best meets your needs.

Hi,
You article is good, presented neatly and systematicaly. But i feel you dropped out about the enclosures and speqaker mounting positions. MDF boxes of various sizes and MDF trays are used in hatchback cars. There are so many pros and cons for trays and boxes, its sure that they are not produced by so called branded companies but at the end of the day to get good sound from your speakers you need them. So reviewing those things becomes a must. Also how can we call a 3way or 4 way speakers coaxial as they lose there CO-AXIAL (same axis) property for the 3rd and 4th speakers.
Regards,
Kiran
Kiran, I do agree .. We will definitely put information on enclosures.
2-Way , 3-Way or in-general n-Way nomenclature is derivered from number of drivers in the speaker.
Co-axial categorization is based on whether all drivers of the a speaker are on same axis or not. Even in the case you are mentioning they are all on same axis (It should not be confused with collinear).
Great reading, thank you so much….
Fantastic article for beginners, thanks a lot
