Neural-THX Surround: A real surround re-inforcement?

November 12, 2007

Neural Audio Corporation, a privately owned company headquartered in Kirkland, Washington, develops digital signal processing technology. Neural’s appliances allow seamless capture, editing and management of analog, digital, linear, compressed, stereo and 5.1 content within the broadcasters existing 2.0 infrastructure.
Earlier, to hear the full experience stereo can provide, a listener needs a listening environment designed with the same meticulous nature as the studio where the music was created.
As we already know, the surround sound reproduction has critical dependency on spatial arrangements in the listening room. All the technologies at present, such as Dolby Digital, DTS etc. have been successful in decoding (separating), the specially encoded (mixed) multi-channel audio signals, to provide surround effects. This limits the enjoyment only to the "specially encoded" formats. How about existing, stereo recordings?
Neural Audio, studied that stereo is 2D in nature, and using the room reflection as a support factor, the surround effect can be achieved with existing stereo source. It claims that, its technology (with 20 years of research effort), is capable of producing, a real surround audio reproduction from the existing stereo sources, and also not constraining the effect to "sweet spots". Thus, it eliminates the old style, spatial restrictions for the listeners; making the "sweet listening room", rather than a sweet spot.
Neural Surround has gained its appreciation by many manufacturers, such as Yamaha , Onkyo and many more.
