IMAX Theatres decides to use ground-breaking acoustical correction technology

October 20, 2009

banner_imax_home IMAX Corporation and Audyssey Laboratories, have entered into a partnership under which the Audyssey MultEQ room/speaker equalization system will be used in IMAX theaters, starting in 2010. The joint press release describes the MultEQ system as a “ground-breaking acoustical correction technology”—one that is capable of optimizing both “time and frequency response in sound systems.”

Usually, home theatre manufacturers were striving to bring in technologies to reproduce theatrical effects in home theatres. But, in case of this, Audyssey’s MultEQ technology, first appeared as a standard feature offered in high-quality, high-performance A/V receivers and controllers from manufacturers such as Denon, Integra, Marantz, NAD, and Onkyo is being adopted back in theatres!

With Audyssey MultEQ one can hear accurate, enveloping, and distortion-free sound everywhere in your listening room. At the heart of MultEQ is a patented method for measuring an audio system in multiple positions throughout a home theater, a movie theater, a recording studio, or a car. Capturing information in the time domain and combining that information in a patented new way enables MultEQ to evaluate not only the frequency response, but reflections in the audio path that effect time of arrival and cause distortion. With this information, MultEQ can equalize an audio system resulting in improved soundstage, accurate tonal balance, deeper and more defined bass, and overall improved imaging.

Sound quality has always been the significant attraction in IMAX theatres. We hope the Audyssey’s MultEQ will bring in more fidelity in IMAX theatres.
